Ballon d’Or 2026: Messi returns as the nominees set the debate

Lionel Messi is back in that field. His official nomination opens a case that cannot be reduced to reputation. That makes Messi an argument, not a conclusion. The list is full of players whose team trophies, European performances or tournament roles point in other directions. Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Rodri, Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and the nine Paris Saint-Germain nominees are among the competing lines of evidence. The point of the shortlist is not to settle those comparisons early. It is to make the comparisons concrete.

The women’s award brings its own compelling cases. Melchie Dumornay, the OL Lyonnes and Haiti star, is among the nominees. The counterweight matters, too: Lyon lost the Champions League final to Barcelona. That is the kind of tension an individual award should surface. A domestic treble, decisive performances and a European final can be a powerful case; a rival’s continental title can be powerful evidence in the other direction.

For now, the responsible response is to let the nominees open the conversation. Name the season, name the moment, name the trophy context, then leave room for the reader to decide which kind of excellence should matter most.
