Sources & rights
A source shows where a fact comes from. A rights record establishes what the publication may use. They are reviewed separately.
Source trail
Story pages show source titles, links and review dates so you can follow the evidence. A review date records a check; an external page can change afterward.
Text, images, recordings and data
A source link or citation does not grant permission to reproduce someone else’s photographs, writing, video, audio or data. We check permission to use material before publication. Contact us with questions about reusing publication material or a rights concern.
Photography and credits
Photographs carry a photographer credit, a link to the source and the applicable license. Captions identify historical and contextual images. We resize and compress photographs for the website and may crop them to fit a layout; the credit notes these changes. Creative Commons photographs, including our resized versions and display crops, remain available under their linked licenses. Their licenses apply to the photographs, not automatically to the surrounding article. A photograph of a place is not evidence that we visited it or that it depicts an event described in the story.
Report a rights concern
Send the affected page or asset URL, identify the material and explain your relationship to the rights or the evidence supporting your concern. The email link below reaches the publication’s public contact address. A concern can lead to review, correction or withdrawal.
