The occasion gives Argentina a date. Understanding what Messi has meant to the country takes longer.
The trophies provide an obvious starting point: the Copa América triumphs of 2021 and 2024, and the World Cup in 2022. Yet a list of honours cannot explain why this relationship carries so much feeling. It records what Argentina won without fully describing the years spent waiting.
Messi’s international story contains a moment when continuing seemed impossible. After Argentina lost the 2016 Copa América final to Chile, he announced his retirement from the national team. FIFA’s contemporary account placed that decision after another final defeat, following the losses of 2014 and 2015.
Looking back from the years of success, it is tempting to make those disappointments sound like necessary steps towards a happy ending. They were not guaranteed to lead anywhere. The player living through them could not know that the World Cup would eventually be his.
That makes his return important. The Argentina career that produced the triumphs we now celebrate continued after a public admission of exhaustion. Persistence, in this story, did not mean never reaching a limit. It meant finding a way to begin again after reaching one.
There is something recognisable in that, even for people whose lives have little in common with an elite footballer’s. Work does not always bring its reward on schedule. A disappointment can make an earlier achievement feel smaller. Sometimes another attempt requires help, time and a different understanding of what is possible.
Messi’s connection to Argentina also offers a way to think about belonging. The boy from Rosario became a player watched across the world. His national-team shirt kept one particular relationship visible within that global life: a responsibility to teammates and a place in a shared Argentine story.
In 2022, that story acquired the image so many had hoped to see: Messi lifting the World Cup. But he did not win it alone. Argentina’s final against France ended 3–3 before a penalty shoot-out decided the title. A captain’s defining achievement was also a team’s achievement, requiring others to carry their part of the pressure.
That is worth keeping in view as the tributes gather. Celebrating Messi should also mean remembering the people who played beside him. His greatness made extraordinary things possible; a team made the victory real.
What he leaves Argentina, beyond the trophies, is a story with room for failure, return and shared accomplishment. The defeats remain part of it. So does the decision to keep playing.
When the applause comes at the Monumental, the achievements will deserve every second. There will also be space to thank him for the years before the medals: for returning, for carrying the shirt again, and for giving a long relationship time to become something different.
